All about Nook Tablet: root & install apps

Since Nook Tablet is used to access contents of Barnes & Noble Store, its Android OS has limited functions. By rooting this device, you can install and use other apps.

I. Root Nook Tablet using Windows

You can follow steps presented in the following video. The original source Full root for Nook Tablet on XDA.

Necessary files:

- usbdrivers.zip & Nook&Zergy.zip

- tgps_launcher.apk <- this file is downloaded using the browser of Nook Tablet

 

Activate adb debugging enabled

Download tgps_launcher.apk  using the browser of Nook Tablet. After downloading, click on “Package installer” > “Settings” and

- Check “Unknown sources”

- Go to Development > check “Usb Debugging” and uncheck “Auto mount”.

 

Root

1. Download usbdrivers.zip & Nook&Zergy.zip  and unzip them into a same folder named “ntroot”

2. First, run file “runmefirst.bat” and follow instructions.

3. Device Manager is activated automatically. Now you need to connect your Nook Tablet with your computers. In Device Manage, Nook Tablet is displayed in USB. If your computer need driver, install driver file downloaded above.

4. Next, run “NookandZergy.bat” and follow instructions.

 

II. Root Nook Tablet using MacOS

Rooting using MacOS is easier. The original source: Nook Tablet - Easy root & Market on MAC (1 download, 1 script to run)

 

Necessary files:

- nooktablet-mac-root-0.5.zip

- go_launcher_ex_v2.66.apk (Link: http://goo.gl/vTNpJ) <- this file is downloaded by Nook Tablet

 

Activate adb debugging enabled

Download file go_launcher_ex_v2.66.apk using the browser of Nook Tablet. In address bar, input http://goo.gl/vTNpJ. Choose “Package installer” > “Setting” and

- Check “Unknown sources”

- Go to Development > check “Usb Debugging” and uncheck “Auto mount”.

 

Root

1. Download nooktablet-mac-root-0.5.zip and unzip

2. Run Terminal and cd to nooktablet-mac-root-0.5 directory.

3. Input command: “./go.sh”

 

II. Google App – Android Market

If you root using MacOS, some necessary apps are already installed

- Go Launcher Ex

- Market Place

- Button Savior

- Home Catcher

- Nook Color App Menu

- Dolphin HD Browser

 

Install Root Explorer (for both using MacOS and Windows)

This is a file management app for copying files into system folder. view Titanium backup & Root Explorer: 2 must-have apps for rooted Android devices for more information.

 

Windows – install Gapp (Android Market)

Download Gapp and unzip. Copy all “system” folder into a folder to your SD card of Nook Tablet.

“system” folder contains 4 folders. Using Root Explorer to copy files of these 4 folders into corresponding folders of “system” folder of your device.

Note: Before copying and pasting, change [Mount R/W] (on the top right) to [Mount R/O].

Next, go to “app” folder and set permissions for all copied files. To set permission, press and hold file to display the context menu.

Reboot and enjoy Android Market.

 

Restore original firmware and unroot

Nook Tablet contains the original firmware (as recovery). Note: your battery should have more than 50%.

- Turn off completely.

- Press and hold 2 volume buttons at the same time than press and hold Power button. Press them until your device turns off.

- Repeat previous step 8 times.

- After 8 times, press Power to turn off and now your have the original firmware.
