English for Writing Papers

Writing academic papers is a difficult job, especially for a non-native English person like me. Therefore, I have collected some standard English words, phrases, and structures. Hope it's also useful for you :)


a) Words and Phrases
  • ... under consideration. (ex. ... is the token under consideration)
  • ..., as well as ...
  • ... due to + N
  • ... that deal with the problem of ...
  • ... take into account ...
  • ... analyze ... in more detail.
  • ... be out of the scope of ...
  • repeatedly
  • negligible
  • "alternatively" is preferred to the word "alternately" (unless you really mean something that alternates)
  • use "whereas" instead of "while" (unless you are referring to simultaneous events)
  • do not use "essentially" to mean "approximately" or "effectively"
  • do not use "issue" as a euphemism for "problem"
  • "affect" (usually a verb) and "effect" (usually a noun)
  • "et al." (italicized)
  • "e.g.," : for example (not italicized)
  • for ease of reference
  • table tabulates ...
  • Accordingly, ...
  • Comparison: N of N1 is Adj-er than of N2 (e.g., the range of values of some variable is bigger than of the others)
  • ... lie on... (be lying on)
  • ...(i.e. shape and texture information) despite severe occlusion and noise.
